Die therapeutische Weisheit der ‘Vayus’ mit Doug Keller – Live und Online

This 21-hour training will merge traditional and modern understanding in practical, effective ways that are immediately useful to teachers, and can be communicated in accessible ways to students to enhance the value of their practice to them.

The training will center around linking the myofascial meridians identified by Tom Myers (simplified as ‘Sutras’ for practice) with the bigger picture of how stimulation of these meridians in asana also stimulates aspects of the Autonomic Nervous System – stimulating and balancing the ‘Vayus.’
This will be joined with a deeper understanding of pranayama practice and its effects, particularly via the Vagus Nerve – which the yogis understood in terms of ‘nadis.’
The treatment of the myofascial meridians will be linked directly to working specifically with chronic pain problems in the body, particularly in the joints.

Each day will include guided practice of asana to introduce these ideas experientially, as well as pranayama at the end of the day.

Part of the training will be an introductory video that sets the context of the therapeutic value of yoga as the hatha yogis understood it. They approached it in terms of the Prana and the Vayus, and the talk will relate this approach to our modern understanding of the autonomic nervous system.

Additional short videos which you can view prior to each training session will help us get straight into the practices, as well as the detailed, interactive treatment of the learning material at the heart of the training.
All videos are optional and free of charge.

Thursday, March 21, 2024: Prana and Apana in Asana
The two fundamental myofascial meridians or ‘Sutras’ that impact posture and movement are at the front and back body, and every yoga asana touches upon them in some way. Moreover, their stimulation in practice is the key to stimulating Prana and Apana, sympathetic and parasympathetic, without overstimulation. The idea of balancing Prana and Apana is at the very heart of yoga teaching, and thus a deep understanding of this is fundamental to everything that follows.

  • 9:15 am to 11:45 am: Fundamentals of Prana and Apana
In the morning session, we will explore these two Sutras with an eye toward more balanced functioning, as well as providing principles for postural and movement assessment for understanding pain problems.
‘Movement Impairment’ is a specific term for aspects of joint movement that are either limited or excessive, and contribute to chronic pain patterns as well as joint degeneration. This idea, along with understanding proper ‘joint play’ as key to increasing both flexibility and stability, will be linked to these two main Sutras, providing fundamental principles for assessment and asana. A key topic will be the proper movement of the sacrum, and its impact on movement as well as low back health.
  • 1:45 pm to 5:45 pm: Refinements in Balancing Prana and Apana
The afternoon session will link the foundation in the feet to the two main sutras, while exploring issues of foot and knee health, and hip opening – as well as connections to the issue of sciatica and sacroiliac pain.
Two additional Sutras will be introduced, influencing the hips, postural balance, and the ‘Core,’ which includes the psoas and its impact. The pranayama practices will go into the fundamentals of influence on states of the nervous system, with attention to the subtle movements, including of the sacrum, that are key to the impact of the practices.

Friday, March 22, 2024: Exploring Vyana (Feeling) and Samana (Equilibrium)

  • 8:30 am to 11:45 am: The Shoulders and Vyana Vayu
We will explore fully the idea of joint play – and its relationship to sensation or Vyana Vayu – which is of particular importance for working with the shoulders on many levels.  We’ll cover fundamentals in how joint play ‘works’ with regard to the shoulders, and cover fundamental principles for shoulder movement and freedom, in asana and in life, addressing typical movement impairments and pain problems. Issues concerning the rotator cuffs and nerve impingement issues will be a significant part of this.
  • 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm: Samana Vayu – the Fundamentals of Equilibrium
Focus will be on the trunk of the body – the area of the ‘gut,’ and issues of the enteric nervous system and achieving healthy equilibrium in this area, described as Samana Vayu.  Practical issues touch upon rotation and twisting, with Sutras that govern twisting and link shoulder actions to the area of the gut. This will have consequences for issues with the diaphragm and psoas, digestive health, and ultimately hormonal balance. The treatment of rotations and functional movement will provide further principles for assessment, and will also carry forward into Saturday’s treatment of asymmetries and scoliosis. Pranayama practice will go further into the subtleties of the nadis in connection with the Vagus nerve, and the importance of the feeling-qualities of the practices for achieving equilibrium.

Saturday, March 23, 2024:

  • 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm: Asymmetries and Equilibrium – Practical Issues Connected to Scoliosis, and the Power of Udana
Both the practice and the assessment techniques will give guidance for dealing with asymmetries in the body that are linked to pain patterns – and the prime (but not only) example of this is scoliosis and associated ‘shorter leg’ patterns.
We’ll take time to look into recognition of forms of scoliosis and accessible ways to work with it, with a special look into the role of the diaphragm.
The focus on the diaphragm will take us into ‘Udana Vayu,’ or the power of intentionality in yoga practice – both its power in asana, and especially in pranayama for transforming our inner states.

Sunday, March 24, 2024:

  • 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm: Our Yoga Nerve – the Neck, the Vagus, and the Power of Udana
The head, neck, and shoulders are the realm of the Vagus nerve, deeply impacting not only the breath, but cognitive clarity and function – the realm of Udana Vayu, and of the deeper practices of yoga.
In practice, we’ll cover ways of working with the neck in connection with the shoulders – and to understand typical neck issues and how to work with them.
This will bring us into further and deeper realms of pranayama, vocalization, dharana and Yoga Nidra, especially in connection with a deep understanding of the Vagus nerve and its stimulation through breath practices in particular. And we complete the circle of the Vayus, with Udana or intention being the heart of yoga practice and of empowerment, and the foundation of the therapeutic value of yoga.

Doug Keller has been teaching workshops and trainings in the therapeutic applications of yoga for a decade, and is known not only for his effectiveness in communicating this ever-evolving approach in these trainings, but also for his extensive writing on the topic in magazines, journals and his two-volume work on ‘Yoga As Therapy.’

He is also, in addition to his traveling and teaching, a Distinguished Professor at the Maryland University of Integrative Health in their Master’s Degree program in Yoga Therapy.
