Dance of the Brahma Viharas – Embodied Wisdom: A Workshop with Manuela Peverelli
With whatever we, as human beings perform - or on the other hand avoid - we are seeking happiness and a sense of wellbeing.
While the mind - more specified: the I-maker - with its veil of illusions, unfulfilled desires, shame, aversion or self-blame not rarely sabotages our inner peace and joy of life, the lively expression of the body does not know masks or veils and its raw sensations (without judgments) lead our attention into the pure present moment awareness.
Physical movement through the law of gravity, inner rhythms, the bodies natural and polar ability to expand and contract, to open up and close in, offer themselves as a limitless explorative journey for our consciousness.
In the practice of Asana, without having to think about it, one can cultivate a positive and healing mind-set and through that choose the path of liberation and sustaining inner peace within this embodied life.
This afternoon workshop presents how a challenging yet playful Asana practice can be a creative vessel for more self-compassion, self-love, kindness, joy and equanimity (the Brahma Viharas). To embody wholesome mental qualities in a playful way may serve as a new or different access to a meditative practice. When one is ready to wake up to it, the Asana practice also can teach a lot about engrained mental patterns and limiting self-believes, which need to be undone in order to find ultimate and lasting happiness.
The workshop will begin with a theoretic introduction of the Brahma Viharas (from a Yogic and Buddhist psychology perspective) followed by a presentation of some tools as an idea for how to bring the Brahma Viharas into a physical practice. Afterwards a juicy yet quiet Asana practice serves as a practical attempt to embody this intention. The workshop will be completed with a contemplative seated Meditation towards the end.
Whoever once in a while notices that the Asana practice seems to be a fight against the body or mind and asks oneself, if these physical shapes really lead to a more peaceful and happy existence, may benefit from joining this workshop. Through the cultivation of wholesome mental states while performing Asanas one may hopefully be able to roll the mat out with more joy again.
Manuela Peverelli is a yoga teacher since 2008. Her attitude and approach towards life is deeply influenced by the Tantric, Vedic and Buddhist philosophy and practice. An education in Ayurvedic psychology at the European Ayurveda Academy in 2013 has enriched her original background in western psychiatric nursery.
Manuela’s teaching is dynamic and powerful, but at the same time a journey to the inner stillness as our refuge. For her, the techniques of Yoga are simply the tools to create a more harmonized home within the body and mind for recognizing the essence of the real self.
Manuela currently lives and teaches in Zurich, but for her own studies and practice periods she also spends a few months yearly in Asia.
