The Hero’s Journey - An Easter Immersion with Michael Hamilton

Over vast stretches of time and in many diverse cultures we find the archetypal hero who, outwardly facing insurmountable odds, gathers the courage to take on the journey, the difficult tasks awaiting him or her, only to discover it is really an inward journey of self-discovery. Drawing on mythological and archetypal teachings from ancient Greece, Babylonia, Persia, and India, we will look at those that have gone before us on the path to light the torch of inspiration.

Morning asana classes will be flow based, alternating with longer holds and intended to awaken the free flow of energy in the body. Different days will be devoted to different areas of the body, such as the hips, the chest, the backs of the legs and the spine. There will also be pranayama practice and various meditation practices, from mindfulness to loving kindness and visualization techniques drawn from tantra. Afternoon sessions we will do chanting, listen to poems and stories of the hero’s journey, as well as doing dyads where we share ideas. We will close each day with restorative yoga.

Michael Hamilton has had a lifelong interest in contemplative practices. Born in South Africa he started with martial arts (age six), leading to an interest in the relationship between body and mind, its support structures in eastern philosophy, its expression through art and its culmination in meditation.
He teaches internal alignment through the practices of yoga as it has been developed in the Modern Yoga lineages of Krishnamacharya, while drawing on the ancient wisdom traditions that emphasises cultivating the complementary practices of compassion and wisdom as the path towards transformation.
With an eye for detail, a concern for safety, a love of ancient wisdom and the belief in beginner’s mind he acts as a spiritual friend to fellow travelers on the path.
His recent teaching draws strongly from the work he has done with Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor, Doug Keller and Sayadaw U Vivekanada.

Michael Hamilton will lead this Easter Immersion from
Good Friday, April 19, through Easter Monday, April 22, 2019
at AIRYOGA, Oberdorfstrasse 2 in 8001 Zurich.

Good Friday, April 19, 2019: The Body as Symbolic Offering
from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm:

Asana practice: The body represents the container of the self. Whatever we believe we are, this construct is intrinsically interwoven with the body. When we use asana to awaken the body’s energy, then through stretches (flexibility) and endurance (strength) many sensations start to arise that can be observed, like a sacred mandala (elaborate form). Through internal alignment of the body we sharpen our observation and come to see what is really there, what this form really is, and in this seeing there is letting go of form itself. The seeing is the freeing and things start to dissolve. We will work towards this dissolution of forms (laya) by focus on grounding through the legs in predominantly standing postures and inversions, finishing with deep relaxation and an introduction to mindfulness meditation.
from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm:
Chanting and a talk on the heroes that have treaded the path before us. There will be a further investigation into the themes of the morning as we add the importance of naming what we see, as in the naming is the knowing, in the knowing is the seeing and in the seeing lies the freedom. Restorative postures will close the day’s practice.

Saturday, April 20, 2019 from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm: Emotional Alchemy
Asana practice on the outer line of the leg and asymmetrical forward bends, followed by a talk on how we can transform our perception of negative emotions as fuel for practice. In tantric practice we use negative emotions to turn to the act of perception itself in order to see what is really there. We can then examine any negativity bias that we find and transform it into a wisdom. Meditationcloses the session.

Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019: Liberation through Impermanence
from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm:

Asana practice with focus on hip opening for leg behind the head postures (variations will be given), finishing with deep relaxation and mindfulness meditation.
from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm:
Talk on how seeing impermanence clearly can help us to let go of our wrong views, releasing long held beliefs and misperceptions, freeing us to be fully present in the moment with our whole heart and mind.
Chanting, breath work and restorative postures.

Easter Monday, April 22, 2019: The Bodhisattva’s Heart
from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm:

Asana practice with a focus on back bending and front-line opening, from simple prone forms to more complex supine forms (variations will be given), finishing with deep relaxation and mindfulness meditation.
from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm:
Talk on how opening to compassion is the key to connecting very deeply within, to unlocking the universal heart. We cannot connect and care deeply about others when we have not found within ourselves a space of acceptance and forgiveness where we can see ourselves in others and others in ourselves.
Chanting, breath work, restorative postures and metta meditation.

The immersion is open to all levels, though some experience with yoga is recommended.

It can be booked for single days, however it is recommended to attend the entire program.

Michael teaches in English.

The cost are:
