Jivamukti Yoga Workshop with Yogeswari

In the 1980’s Sharon Gannon and David Life brought Yoga to the most radical and marginalized people in the East Village of New York. Gradually, they brought Yoga out of the darkness of mysterious spaces, and Jivamukti Yoga became integrated in the avant-garde of New York’s art scene, until it was discovered by megastars of film, music and fashion.

Jivamukti Yoga is a form of spiritualized performance art, where ancient Vedic teachings are brought into a contemporary context, where poetry, dance, asana and music become one, and where the audience become the actors.
Jivamukti Yoga is grounded in the Srutis, wisdom teachings that were revealed to the ancient sages of India, the Rishis, and brings light to their relevance in knowing how to resolve issues in our modern times. The Asana practice breaks through old habits, psychological patterns and resistance on a physical, mental and emotional level. We are constantly reminded to go home to our innermost Self, which is unadulterated Bliss, Love and Peace. Traditional Sanskrit Mantras, hip Indian beats and World Music are an inspiration to every class.

Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Session 1):
Backbends: Embodiement, Love & Stillness

Referencing wisdom teachings from the near and distant past, this vigorous backbend practice will take you on an extraordinary energetic journey through your physical body. Diving deeper into the physical experience will give you solid ground, the strength and stability needed to face the uncertainties of our times with an open, loving and compassionate heart. The expansive energy unleashed by backbends allows you to shift an atmosphere of fear, confusion, polemic, aggression and contraction inside and outside of yourself. You therefore become an agent of envisioning positive social change in facing individual as well as collective consequences of the current public health and economic crisis. We will close with a longer meditation practice to allow personal insights to emerge through stillness.
This workshop will be taught within the framework of a usual Jivamukti class, which includes Vinyasa, Mantra, Dharma and Meditation.
Asana Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Sunday, January 17, 2021 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am (Session 2):
Surya Namaskar, Chatturanga & Inversions

As our Asana practice progresses and we get tickled by the challenge of advanced Asanas, it is easy to become sloppy in what we just assume to be routine, foundational practices. In this workshop, we will focus on all of the precious details of Surya Namaskar Ashtanga A, as well as Jivamukti A & B. Chatturanga is an integral Asana to Surya Namaskar and often a source of anxiety and injury. We will do some exercises in how to build the strength for Chatturanga and in how to do it correctly, with modifications if necessary. Inversions will mainly focus on Sirsasana (headstand) and Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulderstand).
This workshop will be structured as an Asana/Vinyasa lab.
Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Sunday, January 17, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (Session 3):
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika: Detox & Strengthen your Immune System

As we are struggling through a pandemic media, politicians and public health officials continue to argue about pharmaceuticals and vaccines, yet few are speaking about the influence of diet, exercise or yoga on our immune system. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, a medieval text, provides a treasure chest of Asanas, Kriyas and Pranayamas that can help us eliminate both physical and mental toxins, as well as fortify our immune system on a physical, energetic, mental and spiritual level.
This workshop will be structured within the framework of a Jivamukti Open Class, emphasizing twists, kriyas and pranayama.
Level: Intermediate/Advanced
