Yoga and Cultural Journey to Iceland with Michael Thurnherr
The mystic island of fire and ice fascinates and inspires each time anew! We invite you to discover the vastness and pure energy of Iceland, and to get to know its culture.
We will spend this week in the North of Iceland, in Akureyri and the surrounding area. You will have time to dedicate yourself to an extended yoga practice on and off the mat on a daily basis. On three unique expeditions you will discover the fascination and raw energy of Iceland. These tours are specially designed for our group, and professionally organised and guided by Inspiration-Iceland Travel Agency.
The daily yoga practice will take place not only on the yoga mat in the mornings in a new and generous space in Knarrarberg, but also in the natural landscape during the afternoon excursions.
Michael Thurnherr: „Iceland is pure nature, a land of the elements. We will integrate these powers of Nature into our yoga practice: We will root ourselves into the Earth, flow gently and powerfully like Water, shine and transform like Fire, will be light and unruly like Wind, and connect ourselves with the vastness and freedom of the Icelandic heavens.“
Following our morning practice an extensive, vegetarian lunch buffet awaits in the cosy, small café Illmur in town. In the afternoon we will observe the whales in close proximity at the Fjord, explore volcanic territory, bathe in thermal springs, hike and enjoy the midnight sun into the late evening. A led horseback ride on Iceland horses and scootering with Huskies can also be booked as optional activities. A highlight will certainly be the adventurous bus ride which can be booked individually, and will take us in one day from Akureyri over the Highlands, transversing the island to the capital city of Reykjavik.
Despite the many planned activities in nature, there will still be plenty of free time during the week for resting and relaxing in the private sauna, in the outdoor-jacuzzi or with a massage.
This custom-made yoga journey is intended for practitioners who wish to combine outstanding experiences in nature with intensive yoga.
Basic yoga knowledge is recommended. Michael will teach in German, if necessary in German and English.
Michael Thurnherr was first introduced to the tradition of Yoga by Yogi Shyamlal in 1997 in Pushkar, India. Over the years, he let himself be inspired by various yoga traditions and teachers, until he eventually obtained the Anusara Yoga teaching certification in 2002.
It is of great importance to Michael to incorporate the spiritual dimension of yoga in his teaching and to make it possible for students to experience it. He is very skilled at establishing the connection to every day life so the realizations of a yoga class can be applied to „normal life“. He complements the non-dual tantric philosophy with his experience as a follower of the Lassalle-Glassman Zen lineage, where he has been practicing Zen intensively under the guidance of Niklaus Brantschen-Roshi since 1999.
Michael has been teaching at AIRYOGA for many years, and is part of the faculty of the AIRYOGA 200h teacher training. Since April 2009, Michael and his wife Lina have been running the studio Yogaloft in Rapperswil-Jona. He teaches workshops and retreats and offers yoga therapy.
Besides being a dedicated yoga teacher, Michael runs his own graphic design business 2ND WEST full-time and is the father of two children. He loves to be in Nature; it always serves him as a source of power and strength. For this reason he is delighted to return to Iceland for the third time.
This yoga journey with Michael Thurnherr will take place from Sunday, June 24, to Saturday, June 30, 2018 in Akureyri, Northern Iceland.
In basic, but comfortable apartments with shared kitchen, shared bathroom/toilet, private hot tub/jacuzzi, ideally located and very quiet, amidst spread out grounds and with a great view onto the Fjord: http://www.inspiration-iceland.com/en/apartments
Whale watching and power tour to the island Hrisey
We will set out by boat into the Fjord to observe whales close-up. Following this unforgettable encounter with the large ocean mammals, we will take the ferry to the island of Hrisey, the second strongest power place in Iceland. In this natural preserve we will explore the energies on a meditative walk.
Mývatn and the Blue Lagoon of the North
We will experience the phenomenon of high temperature regions, of geothermics, of continental shifts and vulcanos.
Our stops on this spectacular excursion:
• Goðafoss water fall
• Lake Mývatn with its pseudo craters
• Grjótagjá, the passable boundary between the continental plates of Eurasia and North America
• High temperature region of Hverir where we see bubbling mud pots, fumaroles and sulfuric pits
• The volcano Krafla and the explosive crater Víti, which is now a lake
• To make the day complete, we will take a relaxing bath in the hot springs of the Mývatn nature bath - the ‚Blue Lagoon of the North’ - with a mesmerizing view of the midnight sun
Hike to Mountain Lake
We will drive west with the bus, where the high mountain ridge Akureyri and the Fjord provide protection from the weather. The imposing form of the mountains in Iceland were ground by the glaciers in the Ice Age. We will head at leisurely pace to a mountain lake that lies at the foot of the existing mountain peaks. The courageous ones can jump into the lake, while the others enjoy a rest. This round-trip hike lasts about 3 hours.
