Yoga under the Polar Lights in Iceland

The mystic island of fire and ice fascinates again and again. At the begin of the New Year, we invite you to discover the fascination and raw energy of Iceland as well as get to know its culture.

We will spend this first week of the New Year in Akureyri and the surrounding area. Embedded in the Magic of the darkness near the Arctic Circle, we will practice yoga and meditation once or twice a day in a spacious yoga room outside of town. On unique tours we explore the North of Iceland and its naturalphenomena. In addition, you can book an optional sledge tour with huskies.
The program has been especially designed for our group. It will be professionally organised and guided with passion by Andreas Baumgartner, owner of the local travel agency Inspiration-Iceland.

Despite the many planned activities in nature, there will still be plenty of free time during the week for resting and relaxing in the private sauna, in the outdoor-jacuzzi or with a massage.

This custom-made yoga journey is intended for all who wish to start the New Year at a unique place on earth, and who like to combine outstanding experiences in nature with intensive yoga.
Basic yoga knowledge is recommended. Michael will teach in German, if necessary in German and English.

Michael Thurnherr: "Beginning of January, the sun rises at about 11:30am and sets at 3:00pm in Akureyri, in the North of Iceland. Astronomically, these few bright hours are not called a day, but rather 'golden hours'. For us, the extended twilight at 66 degrees Latitude North is quite unusual.
At the beginning of the New Year, we will explore these special phases - the darkness of the night and the time of twilight - 'on and off the yoga mat'. Thematic keywords that will accompany us throughout the week are: Night, Darkness, Unconscious, Silence, Transition, New Beginnings."

This yoga journey will take place from Thursday, January 2, to Thursday, January 9, 2020 in Akureyri, Northern Iceland.

Michael Thurnherr was first introduced to the tradition of Yoga by Yogi Shyamlal in 1997 in Pushkar, India. Over the years, he let himself be inspired by various yoga traditions and teachers, until he eventually obtained the Anusara Yoga teaching certification in 2002.
It is of great importance to Michael to incorporate the spiritual dimension of yoga in his teaching and to make it possible for students to experience it. He is very skilled at establishing the connection to every day life so the realizations of a yoga class can be applied to „normal life“. He complements the non-dual tantric philosophy with his experience as a follower of the Lassalle-Glassman Zen lineage, where he has been practicing Zen intensively under the guidance of Niklaus Brantschen-Roshi since 1999.
Michael has been teaching at AIRYOGA for many years, and is part of the faculty of the AIRYOGA 200h teacher training. Since April 2009, Michael and his wife Lina have been running the studio Yogaloft in Rapperswil-Jona. He teaches workshops and retreats and offers yoga therapy.
Besides being a dedicated yoga teacher, Michael runs his own graphic design business 2ND WEST full-time and is the father of two children. He loves to be in Nature; it always serves him as a source of power and strength. For this reason he is delighted to return to Iceland for the fourth time.

We will stay in basic, but comfortable apartments in Akureyri, with shared kitchen, shared bathroom/toilet and a private hot tub/jacuzzi. These typical icelandic apartments are ideally located and very quiet, amidst spread out grounds and with a great view onto the fjord: http://www.inspiration-iceland.com/en/apartments
OR alternatively at the 4-star Hotel Kea in the center of Akureyri. Double rooms for two or one person with private bathroom and breakfast.

Guided tours
Power tour to the island Hrisey
The ferry will take us to the island of Hrisey, the second strongest power place in Iceland. In this natural preserve we will explore the energies on a meditative walk, if possible on snow shoes. Afterwards we have a swim in the local open air pool or in the hot pots of Hauganes.

Mývatn and the Blue Lagoon of the North
We will experience the phenomenon of high temperature regions, of geothermics, of continental shifts and of the different vulcanos.
Our stops on this spectacular excursion:
•  Goðafoss water fall
•  Lake Mývatn with its pseudo craters
•  Grjótagjá, which is located exactly between the continental plates of Eurasia and North America
•  High temperature region of Hverir where we see bubbling mud pots, fumaroles and sulfuric pits
•  to make the day complete, we will take a relaxing bath in the hot springs of the Mývatn nature bath - the blue lagoon of the North

Northern Lights Tour
A Northern Lights Tour is like a treasure hunt. The conditions for the natural phenomenon Aurora Borealis is a strong solar wind and a clear sky. On one evening during this week we will make our way into the enlightened darkness. The Northern Lights are a natural wonder. Sometimes they shine spontaneously in the night sky, other times they require lots of patience to experience... We cannot provide any guarantees that we will experience this phenomenon; but we will do everything we can to seek them out.

Optional (at an additional cost): Massages and well-being treatments, dog-sledding tour with huskies.

Please see the detailed program (in German) here….
Depending on the weather and snow conditions, we reserve the right to make any necessary short-notice changes to the program and daily schedule.
