Navigating Polarity through Yoga: A Workshop with Anya Porter Yazawa
Yoga can be a tremendously powerful practice, in part, because it addresses life in a vast array of means and ways. Initially, yoga often offers practitioners a panacea of benefits, but then as we step further into the depths of practice, we bump up against blind spots or stagnation. One could say as practice progresses, the polarized aspects of ourselves tend to reveal themselves. The deeper work of yoga begins when we start to witness and balance the binary of opposites within and ultimately traverse toward a third option: unification and/or transcendence.
The binaries explored in this workshop surround effort and surrender, sthiram/sukham or abhyasa and vairagya as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. In Buddhist teachings, these are the the balance between the path of awakening (marga) and the cessation of grasping (nirodha). In Taoist teachings, this is the continuous dance between Yin and Yang and the path of Wu Wei - effortless-effort.
The dance we enter as practitioners is to discover where on this spectrum we tend to exist, where we struggle, and why. Ultimately our task is to find ways to encourage balance and, ultimately, a uniting or yoking of oppositional tendencies: thus, yoga.
Expect a well-rounded physical practice that challenges both mind and body, yet also offers plenty of space for quiet attention. Practice will close with breath and meditation addressing the natural open state of consciousness.
Anya Porter will offer this workshop on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at AIRYOGA, Fabrikstrasse 10 in 8005 Zurich.
