Yoga Nidra Workshop with Adrian Wirth
Yoga Nidra – „the sleep of the yogi“ – originates in the yoga traditions of the Himalaya. Swami Satyananda Saraswati from the Bihar School of Yoga in India and Swami Rama, who founded the Himalayan Institute, have both systematized such a practice.
The origin of Yoga Nidra is a Tantric practice called Nyasa, which means “to place“. The awareness is placed in the body in different ways. Yoga Nidra is a highly efficient method of deep relaxation that helps us to completely relax and regenerate on a physical, mental and emotional level. At the same time it is vitalizing and gently invigorating, the mind becomes fresh and clear.
This technique is suitable for everyone and it is very simple. It’s ideal for all the “high performance people” among us who are constantly under pressure; they will draw great benefit.
However, the original and true purpose is a spiritual one: This practice allows you deep insights in the nature of your consciousness. Ultimately, Yoga Nidra is consciously experienced deep sleep, where the awareness is “sinking” into formless stillness and spaciousness. Thereby the intensity of the influence of karmic tendencies (vasanas or samskaras, old imprints) on our mind will get milder and milder. At some point these mental tendencies will dissolve: Ultimate freedom!
Swami Satyananda says it perfectly:
“Regardless of whether you think a lot or not at all, tension will accumulate.
Regardless of whether you do physically demanding work or you don’t work at all, tension will accumulate.
Regardless of whether you sleep too much or not at all, tension will accumulate.
Regardless of whether you eat heavy food which is rich in protein, rich in carbohydrates, or whether you eat a purely vegetarian diet, you will accumulate tension.
These tensions will gather on the various layers of the human being. They accumulate in the muscular, emotional and mental system.”
With a regular Yoga Nidra practice these tensions are tackled on all levels and slowly dissolve. This effect will be experienced already after a short while of regular practice!
The Yoga Nidra session mainly consists in lying in Savasana on our back. First the teacher mindfully guides us through our body. Depending on the method, a series of inner, mental “journeys” follow: breath awareness and visualizations that bring us further into more subtle levels of mind. Ultimately we sink into Yoga Nidra: Stillness and spacious awareness without conscious content.
If practiced regularly, Yoga Nidra is a source of health, strength, inspiration and joy.
